Inventory No. 14589

Title Chandomāṇikya

Remarks The beginning of the pratyaya section from Ratnākaraśānti’s #Chandoratnākaraṭīkā is appended to this work (cf. reel no. A 20/9).

Author Tathāgatadāsa

Subject Chandaḥśāstra

Language Sanskrit

Text Features In the conclusion to his treatise Tathāgatadāsa mentions Citrabhānu’s Chandaḥsundarikā, a hitherto unknown work on metrics, and confesses his indebtedness to it. Jñānaśrī[mitra], Jayadeva, Piṅgala and Ratnākaraśānti are also mentioned there. The Chandomāṇikya must have been written after Ratnākaraśānti’s Chandoratnākara but probably not very late than it, perhaps still in the 11th c. Cf. reel nos. A 20/12 and G 8/16.

Manuscript Features

The first of the two preserved folios (perhaps fol. 11) contains almost the whole definition of the Madanavilasitā metre (the last metre mentioned in the Dhṛti class of the samavṛtta metres; structure: na-na-ra-ra-ra-ra 7/11) and ends with the introductory words to the Prakṛti class of the samavṛtta metres. The last metre of the Kṛti class discussed in this treatise is Vilāsinī (structure: ra-ja-ra-ja-ra-ja-ga-la, 11/9).

The second folio (perhaps fol. 17) contains the final three stanzas of Tathāgatadāsa’s Chandomāṇikya. On the final line of the recto side of this folio the pratyaya section of Ratnākaraśānti’s autocommentary (cf. reel no. A 20/9) begins, and the folio ends with the concluding remarks to the second pratyaya, called Naṣṭa. Assuming that this MS originally contained the whole of Ratnākaraśānti’s chapter on the pratyaya rules, one may estimate that the MS included at least three more folios. It should be noted that instead of ayam asmadīyaḥ prastāraḥ at the end of the commentary on the second pratyaya is written dvyakṣaracchandasi Ratnākaraśānteḥ prastāraḥ. It seems as if some scholar (Tathāgatadāsa himself?) deliberately appended Ratnākaraśānti’s pratyaya section to the Chandomāṇikya, probably because the pratyayas are not discussed in the latter work.
