Manuscript Features

The folios of this MS are out of order. The actual order of folios is as follows: 140-137; 126-120; 98-92; 99; 109-100; two fragments, of which one is fol. 1; 110-116; 118-126; 137-140. Thus, the following folios are extant: 1; one more fragment; 92-116; 118-126; 137-140. The extant parts of this MS cover portions of the first and second pāda of the first adhyāya. Some folios are damaged in the margins. There are occasional marginal annotations, which have been possibly carried out by the scribe himself.

By the time when this MS has been microfilmed, a few folios seem to have got lost, since in the hand-written catalogue of the NAK we read this MS then consisted of 57 folios. Moreover, the date of this MS is given as “2005 kārtika”. This date, however, should possibly be read as 205 instead of 2005, as the latter reading seems quite improbable.<ref>As we do not know whether the scribe used figures or letters in writing the date, we can only guess at how this number came about. However, it is not uncommon that scribes write “1001” instead of “101” (or likewise “2005” instead of “205”) in respect to the foliation. These figures, then, must be interpreted as “100 + 1” and “200 + 5” respectively.</ref> On the other hand, once we accept a possible date NS 205 of this MS, which corresponds to about 1085 A.D., we arrive at a reasonable time for the copying of this MS. This date is also corroborated by comparing the somewhat unusual letters used in the foliation with the letters collected in a table as given in Bendall.<ref>Cecil Bendall: Catalogue of the Buddhist Sanskrit Manuscripts in the University Library, Cambridge.</ref> Especially noteworthy is the use of the letters lṛ for 10 and lu for 100, which is only recorded for MSS of the 11th century of the Christian era, there.<ref>More commonly, in Newari manuscripts the letters ḍo and a are used for the numbers 10 and 100 respectively.</ref>

There are eight more folios of similar appearance, yet written in another hand, which also contain portions of a sub-commentary on the Cāndravṛtti, possibly likewise of the Śabdalakṣaṇavivaraṇapañjikā. However, these folios contain portions of the Kāśikāvṛtti as well. A few excerpts read as follows:
