Title Chandomāṇikya

Remarks

Author Tathāgatadāsa

Subject Chandaḥśāstra

Language Sanskrit

Text Features In the conclusion to his short treatise Tathāgatadāsa mentions Citrabhānu’s Chandaḥsundarikā, a hitherto unknown work on metrics, and confesses his indebtedness to it. Jñānaśrī[mitra], Jayadeva, Piṅgala and Ratnākaraśānti are also mentioned there. The Chandomāṇikya must have been written after Ratnākaraśānti’s Chandoratnākara but probably not very late than it, perhaps still in the 11th c. Cf. reel nos. A 20/12 and A 20/16.

Manuscript Features

After the third stanza in the concluding part of the Chandomāṇikya seven additional stanzas are to be read, in which metres consisting of one to seven syllables are illustrated. The colophon of the MS is written after these stanzas. Despite this, it is fairly certain that the seven stanzas were not composed by Tathāgatadāsa. Since they are missing in the older MSS of the Chandomāṇikya and the author himself mentions in the beginning of his work that he is not going to deal with such metres, it is clear that the seven stanzas are a later addition.

This MS abounds with scribal errors.
