Manuscript Features

i) śa as part of an initial, middle and final akṣara of a word; twice śa in a word; śa and sa occurring in a word (verse 1–24)

ii) ṣa as part of an initial, middle and final akṣara of a word; śa and ṣa occurring in a word; sa and ṣa occurring in a word (verse 1–16)

iii) sa as part of an initial, middle and final akṣara of a word; sa in combination with consonants (as in vatsa); twice sa in a word (verse 1–19).

MS A 18/6 ends in the middle of verse 5 of section i) (fol. 1v1), resumes at the end of verse 9 of section iii) (fol. 6r1), and winds up with a colophon, which gives the date of copying as NS 541 (fol. 6v5).

Fol. 1r is inscribed as follows: pra. 1076 - cāndravyākaraṇasya (ūṣmabhedaḥ) (sic). After fol. 6v, there is another exposure, showing a kind of wooden cover (no palm-leaf), inscribed thus: pra. 1076 - cāndravyākaraṇasya - upasarga vṛttiḥ tathā uṣmabhedaḥś ca (sic). Since this Ūṣmabheda has nothing to do with the Cāndra system of grammar, we may conclude that the cover described above once included at least two MSS, i. e. the Ūṣmabheda and a so-called Upasargavṛtti of the Cāndra-vyākaraṇa. Thus, the mistaken connection established between the Ūṣmabheda and the Cāndravyākaraṇa has lead to the fact that the other part of the MS (B 34/27) has been named as Cāndravyākaraṇopasargavṛttiḥ andCāndravyākaraṇam in some catalogues (cf. B 34/27).

A short description of MS A 18/6 is available in BSP, vol. IX, p. 47, no. 129. The MS is also mentioned in Śāstrī 1905, p. 31 (sub 1076 ṅa). Śāstrī, however, gives saṃvat 441 instead of 541, as the MS actually reads.

This Ūṣmabheda is different from Puruṣottamadeva's text of the same title. Moreover, there must have been a MS of the latter text amongst the MSS of the NAK, which is mentioned in BSP vol. IX p. 47, no. 128: pra. 1475, and equally in Śāstrī (1905): S. 60 1475 ṅa. This very MS seems now lost, since it is no longer to be found neither in the NGMPP database, nor in the index card catalogue (Hamburg). Grünendahl (1992) does not give any Reel-No. of the MS either.
