Manuscript Features

  • According to the index card the name of this text should be Laṅkāvatāra. The text in the MS itself, however, doesn't mention neither this nor any other title.

There are, in fact, 2 MSS in the NGMCP collection (B 30-6 Laṅkāvatāra and A 220-7 Laṅkāvatāra), which contain a (broadly speaking) medical text called Laṅkāvatāra in the colophons (it is most probable, though, that A 220-7 Laṅkāvatāra is dependent on, if not directly copied from B 30-6 Laṅkāvatāra). The wording of the text found in the present MS seems not to correspond with any parts of Laṅkāvatāra of B 30-6-A 220-7. However, they share certain common features, which may point to their relation: they are (1) medical texts dealing with both 'conventional' medical cures as well as mantra's and (2) the teaching is addressed to the king Vibhīṣaṇa, the legendary brother of Rāvaṇa.

  • On the folios 4 and 5 the correct numbers are canceled and 6 and 7 are respectively written instead.
  • Folio 16 is numbered 15.
  • From 27r onwards there is a change of writing script/ scribe.
