NGMCP

The Online Title List and the Descriptive Catalogue will migrate to a new environment by the end of 2015. Any further changes should be committed to the new catalogue only. Please contact iris.vogel@uni-hamburg.de for further information.

About the Project

The [Nepalese-German Manuscript Cataloguing Project](http://catalogue-old.ngmcp.uni-hamburg.de/wiki/Nepalese-German_Manuscript_Cataloguing_Project "Nepalese-German Manuscript Cataloguing Project") ([NGMCP](http://catalogue-old.ngmcp.uni-hamburg.de/wiki/NGMCP "NGMCP")) is the successor of the [Nepal-German Manuscript Preservation Project](http://catalogue-old.ngmcp.uni-hamburg.de/wiki/Nepal-German_Manuscript_Preservation_Project "Nepal-German Manuscript Preservation Project") ([NGMPP](http://catalogue-old.ngmcp.uni-hamburg.de/wiki/NGMPP "NGMPP")). It is being funded by the German Research Foundation since 2002. The main purpose of the project is to produce a descriptive catalogue of a significant part of about 160,000 manuscripts photographed by the [NGMPP](http://catalogue-old.ngmcp.uni-hamburg.de/wiki/NGMPP "NGMPP") (in the long term, it is hoped that all manuscripts will be catalogued).

We publish the catalogue entries, along with relevant information, on this wiki.

Consult also [the online title list](http://catalogue.ngmcp.uni-hamburg.de) to discover manuscripts.

What you can do

Look for manuscripts of the text you are interested in

Most of you are probably interested in some texts and want to check if there are manuscripts of them in the Nepalese collection. Try simply typing the title of the text in the search field to see if there are any. _Note, however, that no hit does not mean that there are no manuscripts of the text or that the hits are the only manuscripts of the text._ See below to further refine the search.

Look for texts you may be interested in

Some of you may not yet know exactly which text you want to study. If you already have an idea what you may be interested, various search methods offered here should help. Many texts have not been published.

Simply gather information

Various kinds of information about Nepalese manuscripts are available. When a manuscript is catalogued, the catalogue entry includes colophons. You might find mentions of kings, monasteries, master-student relationships, etc. Such pieces of information may be useful in studies of various kinds. Any word in catalogue entries may be searched.

Searching

It may take some getting used to to find desired information using the search facility. See [Help:Browsing and searching](http://catalogue-old.ngmcp.uni-hamburg.de/wiki/Help:Browsing_and_searching "Help:Browsing and searching") (this will be expounded).

Some tips:

  • If you are looking for A 38/1, try typing "A 38 1" (without any punctuation). The same applies to auto-completion in the search field. Start typing "A 38 1" if you are looking for "A 38/1".
  • Titles are not always as you expect. If you know alternative titles, try them as well. Use wildcards (*). We also recommend searches using other methods, such as by searching for the author's name or even by genre.
  • Searches are diacritics insensitive, mostly.

Other than that, you might want to:

Try [Special:Categories](http://catalogue-old.ngmcp.uni-hamburg.de/wiki/Special:Categories "Special:Categories")

All the entries belong to one or more categories. Browse the [categories](http://catalogue-old.ngmcp.uni-hamburg.de/wiki/Special:Categories "Special:Categories"); if there is one that interests you, navigate to the category to see which manuscripts are there. Some categories have sub-categories or hyper-categories. We encourage navigating through them.

Try [Multi-category search](http://catalogue-old.ngmcp.uni-hamburg.de/wiki/Special:MultiCategorySearch "Special:MultiCategorySearch")

You can combine categories (a manuscript of a [Vedic text](http://catalogue-old.ngmcp.uni-hamburg.de/wiki/Category:Veda_(subject_matter) "Category:Veda (subject matter)") written on [palm-leaf](http://catalogue-old.ngmcp.uni-hamburg.de/wiki/Category:Palm-leaf_manuscripts "Category:Palm-leaf manuscripts"), etc.).

    • We recommend spending some time experimenting** to learn how these searches work.

How to read a catalogue entry

There are several conventions used in catalogue entries. See [Help:Reading a catalogue entry](http://catalogue-old.ngmcp.uni-hamburg.de/wiki/Help:Reading_a_catalogue_entry "Help:Reading a catalogue entry").
