Manuscript Features

The MS kept in the National Archives (Kathmandu) is incomplete, only fols. 2–3 (Kapphiṇābhyudaya 1.12–2.12c), 22–25 (8.54d–10.35), 27–34 (11.12b–14.34) and 36–55 (15.9–20.45) being available. However, as Hahn has pointed out, 17 folios of the same MS are now in the Ryukoku Library (Kyoto) and have been reproduced in a facsimile edition.<ref name="ftn1">See Shankar/Hahn 1989, pp. iv–vii, Hahn 1997, p. 208; Inokuchi 1990, pp. 328–336.</ref> These are fols. 1, 4–14 and 17–21. Thus only four folios of the MS, namely fols. 15–16, 26 and 35, are missing. A copy of this MS was prepared at a time when the old palm-leaf MS was still complete. This later copy, kept in the National Archives (Kathmandu) and microfilmed under reel number B 18/14, is a palm-leaf MS consisting of 113 folios. It is dated saṃvat 648 (1528 AD).

An important peculiarity of the present MS is that “the scribe has added to the text very tiny vertical strokes which are meant to indicate the separation of words and compounds. We do not find these strokes at all places and moreover they are not applied in a consistent manner. Sometimes only words are separated, sometimes also the parts of a compound, sometimes even the negative prefix a- .”<ref name="ftn2">Shankar/Hahn 1989, p. xx.</ref> The MS is remarkably faultless. Most of the errors and omissions have been corrected in the margins.

The MS is undated, but “judging from the script […] it was written in the eleventh or twelfth century A.D.”<ref name="ftn3">Shankar/Hahn 1989, p. xxxv.</ref>
