Title Dhanañjayakoṣa

Remarks

Origina author Dhanañjaya

Subject Koṣa

Language Sanskrit, Newari

  1. There is typical numerical figure of 5 in this text, which is used in the right margin, running śloka number and date. There is upward crooked mark towards right, just above top part of normal numeral 5, so that one may confused with the figure 6.
  2. There are prosodic mark of laghu ( l ) and guru ( s ) at different places to indicate the 5th and 6th letter of this Anusṭup verse.
  3. The text ends at folio number 27 recto. The scribe has numbered it as 27 which makes confusion people as if it is verso of the manuscript. We have mentioned it as 27r.
  4. The title of this manuscript is given as Dhanaṃjayakoṣa (27r2), named after its author Dhanañjaya (about AD 1123). But this is famous in the name of Nāmamālā or Pramāṇanāmamālā ( mentioned in the text 26v3) elsewhere. There are 204 running ślokas in this text ( numbering is made mistake in between No. 202 to 204, missing 203 and numbering 203 to actual 204 )

Newari gloss is not given in the running text. It is given at margins. So Newari gloss may be later addition to the text.

This Dhanañjayakoṣa is a glossary of synonyms, which contains 200 Anusṭup verses. Elsewhere, There are two chapters of synonyms ( nāmamā ) and homonyms ( nighaṇṭu ). [See M.M.Patkar – History of Sanskrit Lexicography, Delhi : MMP, 1981 “Nāmamālā” pp. 76-77 ]

There is mentioned of the source texts of compiling words from earlier work of Akalaṅka ( Jain logician ), Pūjyapāda ( an epithet of Devanandin, the author of the Jainendravyākaraṇa ) [T. Aufrecht, 1962 ] and of Dhanañjaya, himself's Dvisandhānakāvya. Here the scribe has distorted the name Akalaṅka as ‘mastakaṃ’ (“head”) and Pūjyapāda as “pujyaṃ pāda” (“worshipful feet”) as if they are words. [See below the ending verse 200. ]
