Manuscript Features

The MS was probably written by the same scribe who wrote the MS of the Kāvyādarśa microfilmed on reel no. A 21/21. On the variety of the Old Bengali script used in this MS cf. Dimitrov 2002a, pp. 27–78.

In the BSP as well as on the original index card, the number of folios is given as 65. Since the very end of the work is cited in the BSP, the MS should have been intact at the time of the first cataloguer. The microfilm, however, contains only fols. 1–36r and 37v. Fol. 37v ends at the beginning of the commentary on sūtra 4.2.21. In the BSP, the following is cited from part of the MS not available on the reel:

,, ,, ,, dvitīyoʼdhyāya upamāvicāraḥ |
,, vṛttau prāyogike pañcamedhikaraṇe (!) prathamoʼdhyāyaḥ kāvyasamayaḥ |
,, ,, ,, ,, dvitīyoʼdhyaḥ (!) |
śrīmadācāryaVāmanaviracitāKāvyālaṅkārabṛttiḥ (!) samāptāḥ ||    ||

antimaṃ vākyam |
pārijātakusumena cāruṇā surendradevanivahena bhūtaye | kumbhadāraṇasabhāsabhājitaṃ bhāratīpadam upāṣmahe vayaṃ || śaśivāṇasamudrenduśāke…… śubhe | vyalikhad Vāmanagrantham |

Thus, according to the transcription of the partially mutilated date, our MS seems to have been written in the year 1451 of the Śaka era, i.e. 1529 AD.

Type of Film negative

Remarks exp. 3 with fols. 1v–2r is of poor quality, the same folios being clearly legible on exp. 4; exp. 17 contains fols. 14v–15v, and exp. 18 fols. 15r–16r; the upper half of exp. 39 is damaged, while the lower half is out of focus, so that fol. 36v cannot be seen and fol. 37r is almost completely illegible; this is the last MS filmed on this reel.
