Manuscript Features

This MS comprises an enumeration of subantas, i.e. nominal stems, classified according to their gender and stem class respectively. There are five sections, namely puṃliṅga, napuṃsaka, strīliṅga, vācyaliṅga (i.e. adjectives), and sarvādayaḥ (pronouns and numerals, of which those from 1 to 100 are given in full). Within the first four sections, the nouns are arranged alphabetically according to their stem final (ajanta in –a, ā etc., halanta). On the first foll. the individual subsections are numbered (stems in –a || 1 || etc.), but not throughout the MS.

Unlike other texts concerned with nominal declension in the widest sense, this text does not give any paradigms of declension, but only enumerates the respective subantas in the form of the nominative singular, stating in what kind of final vowel or consonant the stem ends.

Foll. 3–11 are slightly damaged; the writing on foll. 6v; 7r; 9v and 10r is partly rubbed off.

This text is styled Suvidhānaśabdamālāparikrama on the index card of the NAK. Subhūticandra (11th/12th c.), its author, is known to have commented in his Kāmadhenu on Amarasiṃha's Nāmaliṅgānuśāsana and in his Subantaratnākara on Dharmakīrti's Rūpāvatāra.
