Manuscript Features

This MS constitutes a commentary on the Dhātupāṭha of the Cāndra system of grammar. The author styles his work a prakriyā for the enlightenment of the unlearned as to the employment of the correct verbal forms. Of these, only three out of the ten moods and tenses of Sanskrit verbs are actually taught, to wit the present (laṭ), simple future (lṛṭ), and imperative forms (loṭ). In the initial portion of the text, many a sūtra of Candragomin is being cited. Moreover, a metrical enumeration of the twenty verbal prepositions (upasarga) is given, which reads as follows:

praparāpasamanvavanirdurabhiḥ vyadhisūdatiniḥ pratipa[r]yapayaḥ |
upa āṅ iti vi[]śatir eṣa sakhe upasargavidheḥ kavinā kathitaḥ ||
(fol.1v5–2r1)

The sequence of these upasarga-s or prādi-s, however, does not follow the traditional sequence of the Cāndra system as laid down in the Cāndravṛtti on Cān. 1.1.109, but follows exactly the order of the Kātantra system, as preserved in Puruṣottama's Upasargasūtra.

There has been some confusion as to the name of the text, being called Śabdakaraṇa in the NGMPP data base and styled śabdkaraṇā bhuvādayaḥ on the back of fol. 1 by members of the NAK. This obviously stems from a misreading of the words śabvikaraṇā bhuvādayaḥ (samāptā), ending the commentary on the first class of verbs (fol. 61v).

As the MS is incomplete, only the following portions of the original text are extant: the commentary on verb classes I, II and IV; parts of III, V and IX. Classes VI–VIII and X are missing completely, the MS ending in the middle of the commentary on Dhātupāṭha IX.14.

Fols. 14–67; 74–92; and 107 are damaged at the lower margin.

Fols. 82; 93–106; and 108ff. are missing. Fol. 86 has come between fols. 76 and 77.

Exposures 96 below and 97 show another folio, unconnected to this text, being used as a cover leaf for the MS.
