Manuscript Features

This neatly written MS constitutes a commentary on the upasargas, i.e. verbal prepositions pra etc. (prādi). Instead of the usual number of 20, this text enumerates and exemplifies 19 prepositions, of which two (to wit āṅ and ni) occur twice. Ud, su and abhi, which are normally included in lists of that kind, are missing. The order of the prepositions is as follows: pra parā apa sam anu ava nir dur vi āṅ ni adhi api ati ni prati pari upa āṅ. After each preposition, a list of meanings is introduced, after which every meaning is again individually mentioned and exemplified.

Up to ati, the text follows quite faithfully the order of prepositions taught in the Cāndravṛtti ad Cān. 1.1.109, with a minor transposition of ni, which there comes after api. The same position of ni, however, is observed in the so-called Viṃśati-Upasargavṛtti, a like text attributed to Candragomin himself. From ati onwards, the sequence follows the end of the Upasargasūtra (attributed to Puruṣottamadeva) belonging to the Kātantra, avoiding, however, a second mentioning of api, which there stands between pari and upa. Thus, the present text seems to be an amalgam of originally two lists of verbal prepostions, which explains the doubling of some prepositions and absence of others.

Comparing the respective lists of meanings and examples of the two prepositions occurring twice, i.e. āṅ and ni, it can be said that they are essentially the same, mostly differing by variant readings only. By these, sometimes being nonsensical because of clerical errors, a supposed original list of meanings and examples can be restored quite easily. As none of the lists of meanings corresponds to any of the respective lists belonging to the Kātantra, it seems safe to attribute this text to the Cāndra system of grammar.

Exposure 2 shows the back of fol. 1v, bearing the title prādivṛttiḥ in Nāgari script as well as the access number and stamp of the NAK. Exp. 9 shows the back of fol. 7r.
