Manuscript Features

This MS constitutes a treatise on verbal conjugation in classical Sanskrit, i.e. the different forms of the tiṅantas, words ending in verbal personal endings. It follows the Cāndra system of grammar, since the sūtras of Candragomin, passages from the Cāndravṛtti and the Cāndra Dhātupāṭha are quoted frequently.

The text is mainly concerned with the paradigms of the ten tenses and moods of Sanskrit verbs viz. present indicative, perfect, periphrastic future, simple future, (the forms of the conjunctive being 'Vedic' are left out in the Cāndravyākaraṇa), imperative, imperfect, optative and precative, aorist and conditional. Thus, only nine lakāras are enumerated. For exemplifying, the root pac 'to cook' is used throughout the text, sometimes supplied by the root ās 'to sit' as a specimen of intransitive roots. Interestingly, the forms of the present and perfect participles (technically termed śatṛ, śānac and kvasu) are also enumerated, although these are, strictly speaking, subanta forms, following the paradigms of nominal declension. However, these are treated as 'words having the meaning of a verbal action' (kriyārtha).

Foll. 1; 4 and 20 are slightly damaged. Exposures 2 and 22 show two cover leaves, the first one bearing the accession no. of the NAK.

Short descriptions of this MS are to be found in BSP vol. vi, p. 23, no. 69; and Śāstrī 1905, p. 83, sub 1645 cha.
