Manuscript Features
This MS consists of two parts: the first one is concerned with the tiṅanta section of Sanskrit grammar: It comprises various verb paradigms, beginning with the roots bhū, nind, khā etc. Thus, all (except the Vedic conjunctive) of the so-called lakāras (the moods and tenses of Sanskrit verbs) are exemplified. Except for the first root, bhū, the meanings of the verbal roots are given in the manner of the Dhātupāṭha. Allowing for the few differences between these lists of roots of the different systems of grammar, this text seems to follow the pāṇineyan system, although the sequence of roots is sometimes changed. Only selected roots are exemplified.
This part of the MS begins on exposure 5, showing fol. 1v. The writing on some foll. is partly rubbed off. Foll. 4v/5r seem to have been extant but not microfilmed, since exp. 7 below shows fol. 4r (as can be seen by the text continuing from 3v). Exp. 8 above, however, shows fol. 5v. The MS breaks off on exp. 45, exemplifying root nikṣ. Thus, only roots of the first verb class have been treated so far.
The second part of this MS, apparently written by the same hand, but with a new foliation, is concerned with the subanta section of Sanskrit grammar: it gives numerous paradigms for the declension of Sanskrit nouns. There are five sections, namely puṃliṅga, napuṃsaka, strīliṅga, vācyaliṅga (i.e. adjectives), and pronouns (sarvādayaḥ). Within the first four sections, the nouns and adjectives are arranged alphabetically according to their stem final (ajanta in –a, ā etc., halanta). The first words to be exemplified are vipra, hāhā, agni, sakhi, pati etc. Apart from the listing of complete paradigms, there is a number of mnemonic verses which give lists of words following the same type of declension. Incidentally, both the same sequence of nouns exemplified and the mnemonic verses are to be found in another MS (B 34/16) styled Subvidhānaśabdamālāparikrama. There, however, the words are only listed, without giving the full paradigms.
This portion of the MS starts on exp. 46 below (fol. 1v, the foliation being lost because of physical damage) and continues up to exp. 81 above (fol. 36v). There is a breech in the MS, exp. 81 below showing a fol. counted as 39v. Somehow the foliation went wrong here, since the next foll., being coherent with the former, are counted fol. 30, 31 etc. Exp. 87–91 show some isolated foll., presumably belonging to the same text, giving the paradigms of some demonstrative and personal pronouns.
Exp. 92 shows the cover leaf bearing the stamp of the NAK.
On exps. 2–4 foll. 37–39 are microfilmed, which are subsequent to fol. 36 on exp. 81 above. Exp. 4 below, however, shows a portion of text which occurs equally on exp. 67 (= fol. 23r). Thus, the MS may incorporate some isolated foll. of another MS of the same text.
