Manuscript Features

The MS is fragmentary, as is indicated by the notice "kāmaśāstra patrāṇi-prakīrṇa" added later on the cover-leaf (1r). The following fols. are preserved: 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 22, 27, 28, 32–34, 36, 38, 40, 48. Subtopics are introduced by the formula atha ... yathā, and often wound up with iti ... (see extracts). Throughout the MS the Anuṣṭubh metre is being used, apart from the last two lines of fol. 48v, where some Mantras are given. There are occasional marginal corrections.
In verse 63 the four kinds of men and women respectively, as taught in this text, are as follows:

śaśakaḥ padminītuṣṭir mmṛgo pi citriṇī tathā |
vṛṣabhaḥ śaṃkhinītuṣṭir hastinī ramate hayaḥ || 63 ||

The numbering of the verses seems to have been from verse 1 to at least 243, no further sub-divisions or chapters used. To identify this text, the last verse might be of some help, as it says:

madanodayaṃ hi tato yo jānāti sa sundaraḥ |
tasmān mantram upāstavyam madanodayahetave || 243 ||

The word madanodaya, here occurring twice, could be a hint as to the title of the work. Sundara is one of Kāmadeva's epithets.
