Manuscript Features

This MS constitutes a sub-commentary on the Cāndra system of grammar by Pūrṇacandra. It seems to comment on the Cāndravṛtti likewise, which, according to the only sub-colophon, is said to be the work of Candragomin himself:

paramopāsakacandragomipraṇītaśabdalakṣaṇavivaraṇapaṃjikāyām ācāryapūrṇṇacandrakṛtāyām prathamo dhyāye dvitīyaḥ pādaḥ samāptaḥ.

Thus, Pūrṇacandra wrote a pañjikā on Candragomin's śabdalakṣaṇavivaraṇa. This is also corroborated by the following note on the back of fol. 241/82 (exp. 5) which is written in Devanāgarī characters:

candragomipraṇītasya śabdalakṣaṇavivaraṇasya pañjikā pūrṇacandrakṛtā 1- adhyāya 2 pāda samāptiḥ.

If this be the case, the term vivaraṇa would stand for vṛtti, and śabdalakṣaṇa would be another expression for Cāndravyākaraṇa. As this grammar starts with the well-known verse:

siddham praṇamya sarvajñaṃ sarvvīyaṃ jagato gurum |
laghuvispaṣṭasampūrṇam ucyate śabdalakṣaṇam ||

this seems to be at least a possible tradition of naming the text.
However, there is said to be yet another system of grammar which is referred to as śabdalakṣaṇa, namely the Mañjuśrīvyākaraṇa or Mañjuśrīśabdalakṣaṇa of a certain Sādhukīrti. The expression śabdalakṣaṇa occuring in MSS may hint, therefore, to either of the two grammatical systems.

There is a double foliation in this MS: on the left-hand margin there are numerals (either used only on the folios containing the pratyāhārasūtras or throughout the first pāda of the first adhyāya as well) and numbers, running consecutively throughout the whole MS, whereas the numbers on the right-hand margin start anew counting from one onwards in every pāda.
The following portions of the text are extant: parts of the commentary on the pratyāhārasūtras; the end of adhyāya 1 pāda 2; parts of adhyāya 1 pāda 3; one folio of adhyāya 1 pāda 4.
In more detail: fol. 239/80r commenting on Cān. 1.2.123 to fol. 241/82v ending the second pāda of the first adhyāya.
Fol. 5 (marked with the numeral pka for four on the left-hand margin!) on the first pratyāhārasūtra up to fol. 11. Fol. 12 is missing, next come foll. 13-15 and fol. 33, which has the numerals la tri for 33 on the left-hand margin.
Fol. 280/39 on 1.3.49-51; fols. 298/57-355/114 (1.3.87-150). In this section, fol. 353/112 is mistakenly counted 353/113.
The last folio is numbered 121 and comments on Cān. 1.4.124.

The individual sūtras are referred to with one, two or three akṣaras within double daṇḍas. Sūtra 1.3.51 (fol. 280/39v), which runs vyadhajapo ʼprādeḥ | is referred to with || vyadhakaḥ ||.

Some 30 folios are damaged to various degrees.
