Manuscript Features

This MS comprises a portion (Adhyāya 1–4) of the Bhāṣāvṛtti, Puruṣottamadeva's commentary on Pāṇini's Aṣṭādhyāyī. It sticks to the order of the pāṇineyan Sūtras, leaving out, however, all those Sūtras concerned with Vedic formations and accents.
The text starts on fol. 2r amidst the traditional listing of the pratyāhāra-s and ends on fol. 167v with the commentary on Sūtra 4.4.101. The first folio and at least those folios which contained the remaining Sūtras of the fourth Pāda of the fourth Adyāya (i.e. 4.4.102–144) are missing.
On fol. 149r, the MS skips from Sūtra 4.2.142 to 4.3.12, thus leaving out the end of the second and the beginning of the third Pāda of the fourth Adyāya.
There are portions of the writing crossed out in many places, part of which are corrections by the scribe himself, others are really portions of the commentary which seem to have been crossed out later by somebody else.
Occasionally, the scribe marks virāma by a dot after an akṣara, e. g. ca. for c, but not consistently.
Some 36 folios are damaged at the lower or upper edge, leading to the loss of some akṣara-s of the text proper, and of marginal corrections. Of fol. 114v, ca. 20 % of lines 4 and 5 have been lost.
