Manuscript Features
The manuscript consists of 6 blocks each of which has an own foliation. There is no consecutive foliation through the ms. A, B, and D are written by several scribes.
[A] 198 folios - 13 stories from the Divyāvadāna and an episode from the Mahāvastu
[B] 213 folios - 13 stories from the Divyāvadāna
[C] 52 folios - 2 stories from the Divyāvadāna
[D] 45 folios - 2 stories from the Divyāvadāna and 2 x 2 stories from the Avadānaśataka
[E] 5 folios - Kaṭhināvadāna
[F] 19 folios - Ahorātravratacaityasevānuśaṃsāvadāna
A leaf photographed between E and F contains an incomplete table of contents which lists only the first 7 stories.
In A fol. 106 is lost.
There is no folio with number 129. The text continues from 128v to 130r.
The stories from the Divyāvadāna are copied in a curious order (see the sub-colophons below), probably because the original manuscript was portioned to several scribes to let them work simultaneously and copies made were bundled together without much care about the order.
The numbering of the stories is different from that of the edition of Cowell & Neil. According to Iwamoto's comparable table of the Divyāvadāna based on mss kept in Tokyo, Paris, Bengal and Kyoto, our ms has a similar order to the Kyoto ms. The order of the stories in block B is exactly the same. Moreover, both mss include two stories from the Avadānaśataka. These two stories, i.e., the Maitrakanyakāvadāna and the Śaśāvadāna, are copied twice in block D in our ms.
The seventh story in block A has no title, but is named as "śāriputramahāmaudgalyāyana" in the incomplete table of contents. This is an extract from the Mahāvastu and tells how Śāriputra and Mahāmaudgalyāyana became disciple of the Buddha and how they were rescued by a horse king Keśin (Bodhisattva) from the Rākṣasīdvīpa as they were merchants in the remote past. The text corresponds to pages III.56.6-77.11 of Senart's edition.
Block E contains a short version of the Kaṭhināvadāna.<ref>The text is included in the ms of the Divyāvadāna kept in Paris too. Cf. Iwamoto 1978, p. 145.</ref> Its text is close to that of A119-15 (ms E in Degener's edition), but not the same. § 4 is extended in our ms.
Block F contains the Ahorātravratacaityasevānuśaṃsāvadāna.<ref>The ms of the Divyāvadāna in the Tokyo University Library (no. 133) includes as the 17th story the Caityavratānuśaṃsā, another text from the same genre. Cf. Iwamoto 1978, p. 146.</ref> Our ms has common readings with the ms kept in the Tokyo University Library (no. 55; ms C in Handurukande's edition).
On the whole the ms is written carefully, but it has more than a few simple mistakes. Probably the original mss were already faulty.
